The Sea Faerie Queen's Necklace

As a child I loved L. Frank Baum's Oz series, and just recently i discovered his story The Sea Fairies ([link]). This necklace was partly inspired by that story (more the title, than anything else, really), and also inspired by my love for the ocean.

For this necklace i just wanted to create something that might have been worn by a sea faerie queen...but washed up on shore and found by me :D

I am submitting the first submitted photo of this necklace to Lisajen-stock's Fairy contest [link] :D

15 hours to make, 9 inches long from the top of the mother of pearl donut button to the bottom of the sliced shell. A little too cumbersome to wear, but i think it's gorgeous to look at!

I've posted other views as well :)

Materials: Silver 34 gauge wire I twisted, silver findings, old brass and silver chains that I had saved from broken necklaces over the years, silver star and diamond shapes, mother of pearl donut button, glass beads, frosted sea glass beads, mexican abalone shell chips, various real shells, peach 6mm, blue 2mm, and aqua 2mm cat's eye beads, freshwater pearls.

Edit: Credit has to be given to Doctor-Gus for the idea of packing 'a whole ton of stuff' onto one of these donut buttons XD He was less than impressed with the sparsity of Danger Ahead [link] and wanted me to add more to it...i liked the idea, but for a different necklace XD i'm darn proud of Danger Ahead! Even if it is sparse! ESPECIALLY because it is sparse!

Come on, don't tell me you think you're finished with this piece so soon. You gotta add a whole bunch more stuff to the necklace chain now.

lol XD if i do, the whole thing will fall apart...as it is, i'm amazed that it's held up this far....

I absolutely love the colors in this piece. You might be right that it would be too cumbersome to wear, but it would be gorgeous to hang and look at in the sunlight. Beautiful!

Oooooo! That's a really good idea! I've actually been wearing it, but i love the idea of using it as a suncatcher!!!!!

I love it! Shame it's to heavy to wear... although I'd probably wear it anyway. If you wanted to make it easier to wear you could put beads and such at the back to even out the weight (like those funky chocker things that extend all the way out to the shoulder). I don't know if I'm making any sense now. Anyway awesome work!

I love how busy this piece is, it really looks like it's been dropped by a passing mermaid or something!
